On March 20 that Kye Hyun Kyung, head of Samsung Electronics’ DS (Device Solutions) Department, announced at today’s Samsung Electronics Shareholders’ Meeting that Samsung Electronics plans to launch a mobile phone using LPDDR memory by the end of this year and early next year. AI chip Mach-1.
Qing Guixian said that the Mach-1 chip has completed FPGA-based technical verification and is in the SoC design stage. The AI chip will complete the manufacturing process by the end of this year, and an AI system based on it will be launched early next year .
Korean media Sedaily reported that the Mach-1 chip is based on a non-traditional structure and can reduce the bottleneck between off-chip memory and computing chips to 1/8 of existing AI chips.
In addition, the chip is positioned as a lightweight AI chip, which does not require the currently in short supply and expensive HBM memory , but uses LPDDR memory.
Samsung’s traditional role in the AI semiconductor market is as a supplier of high-performance memory chips that assist computing, rather than as a developer of logic chips.
However, Samsung currently lags behind its old rival SK Hynix in terms of market share and development progress of advanced HBM memory. Micron also took the lead in obtaining a license to supply industry leader Nvidia.
Therefore, it is necessary for Samsung Electronics to develop its efforts in the field of AI logic chips that was previously neglected.
Referring to previous reports, Samsung has previously announced a cooperation with South Korean IT giant NAVER to create a dedicated AI chip for the NAVER HyperCLOVA large model. Recently, Samsung has established AGI computing laboratories in the United States and South Korea , with the goal of developing applicable AI chips through rapid iteration. A new semiconductor for future general artificial intelligence computing.
