To expand its strength in the AI field, Apple has acquired DarwinAI. According to Bloomberg, Apple acquired DarwinAI earlier this year to further expand its strength in the field of AI.
We inquired about public information and found that DarwinAI was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. DarwinAI’s two core technologies are AI technology for inspecting parts during the manufacturing process, and the use of machine learning to create smaller and more efficient AI systems.
Communitech, a Canadian startup community, once disclosed that DarwinAI received US$6 million in financing in December 2020, and the total financing received by the company in the five years since its establishment increased to US$15.5 million. The company works with Lockheed Martin and Intel.
After Darwin AI was acquired, the company’s official website and social media accounts have been offline. Alexander Wong, an artificial intelligence researcher at DarwinAI, has now joined Apple’s AI division as a director.
Apple confirmed its acquisition of Darwin AI, but said in response to the media: “Apple’s acquisition of small technology companies is a regular investment behavior,” but did not disclose the purpose or plan of the acquisition.
Apple is working to build artificial intelligence capabilities into its next-generation iOS 18 and macOS 15 operating systems as it seeks to catch up with Microsoft, Google and others in the artificial intelligence market.
If Apple wants to compete with Microsoft’s Bing, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other generative AI products, it will have to integrate generative AI into a range of products. Apple is testing large-scale language models, and it is said that Siri, Shortcuts, Messages, Apple Music, etc. will all use artificial intelligence features.
