February 28 news, according to foreign reports, Intel senior executives told “Nikkei Asia” that as the technology industry seeks the next growth driver, Intel aims to provide as many as100 million 100 Million AIPCs units by 2025. AI PCs provide the core processor.
David Feng, vice president of Intel Client Computing Group, said that the company expects to deliver 40 million AI PCs this year and 60 million units next year, accounting for more than 20% of the total global PC market expected in 2025.
Feng said that in the AI PC era, Intel not only needs to care about chip performance, but also services and user experience, which makes cooperation with software and application developers even more important.
“Our business is selling chip performance, selling CPU and GPU performance, and the entire chipset,” Feng told Nikkei Asia. “Now that we’re really in the business of selling experiences… I’m describing something that can only be achieved through software, so there’s a growing need to work with application developers.”
He said Intel is working with Microsoft to define AI PCs. The concept has three key elements: Intel’s Core Ultra PC chipset, the company’s first platform with a built-in neural processing unit (NPU) designed to handle AI workloads; Microsoft’s AI Chat The robot Copilot; also has a dedicated “copilot key” on the keyboard. Feng said he expects business spending to increase because of the potential of AI-powered computers to improve work efficiency.
Carla Rodriguez, vice president and general manager of Intel Cloud Software Ecosystem, told Nikkei Asia that the company is increasing its efforts to attract partners and expand use cases. One example she gave was Intel’s work with video conferencing service providers such as Microsoft Teams, Webex and Zoom. Rodriguez said the partnership aims to develop AI-driven features such as eye tracking that automatically adjusts the user’s gaze to the camera, background removal and smart framing to ensure the user remains centered on the screen.
The artificial intelligence computer developed in partnership with Microsoft will also provide features such as instant translation of American Sign Language into English text, real-time transcription of videos, and automatic conversion of text into PowerPoint slides. Intel has also deepened its cooperation with security software developers and used NPU to implement functions such as anti-phishing and ransomware detection.
Intel is the world’s largest supplier of personal computer microprocessors, controlling about 76% of the notebook computer chip market share. However, Apple and Qualcomm are trying to capture a larger market share with Arm-based computer designs.
Counterpoint Research said that the global PC market will decline by 14% year-on-year in 2023 due to the slowdown in the business and consumer sectors. The research firm predicts that shipments in the global PC market may rebound to pre-COVID-19 levels this year, supported by the Windows 11 operating system replacement, Arm-based PCs, and the increasing penetration of AI PCs.
With the exception of Apple, all major PC makers have said they plan to launch AI-powered PCs later this year. Acer Chairman Jason Chen recently told reporters that generative AI is a new opportunity for the industry and will be Acer’s top priority in 2024.
