While the first Android 15 developer preview isn’t too focused on a visual overhaul, it does introduce a useful feature called “Notification Cooldown.” This feature solves the annoyance of your phone constantly buzzing or beeping due to a repetitive stream of notifications.
The concept is simple – if your phone receives multiple notifications from the same app within a short period of time, the notification cooldown gradually reduces the volume and vibration intensity of those subsequent notifications.
This alleviates the distraction of endless buzz caused by chatty contacts or active group threads. If every notification in your app is critical, Google allows notification cooldowns to be applied specifically to conversations.
It’s also important to note that this “cooldown” is not permanent. After a brief pause in the conversation, the notification will return to maximum volume. If you need all alarms to sound at maximum volume (for work or on-call situations), you can easily disable this feature.
Enable/disable Notification Cooldown
Google automatically enables this feature in developer previews, but if you’re using it, follow these steps to customize it:
- Open your device’s Settings app.
- Click “Notifications”.
- Scroll down and select “Notification Cooldown.”
Your choice:
- “Apply cooldown to all notifications” for total silence.
- “Apply Cooldown to Conversations” to target chatty.
- “Don’t use notification cooldowns” turns off the feature entirely.
Informing the future of cooling
As Android 15 progresses, Google could further improve notification cooldowns. An ideal addition would be customization on a per-app basis, allowing users to fine-tune which apps apply this calming feature.
Even in its initial form, Notification Cooldowns has the potential to simplify how we manage notifications on our devices.
